Our progress on sustainability

Sustainability is at the heart of our purpose Making Better Happen. Our sustainability work is embedded in all parts of the AAK value chain, from the crop all the way to the brand on the store shelf.

At AAK, we work hard to make better sustainability happen, from plant to brand. Our three key priorities are Climate, Biodiversity and, People, which we apply across the value chain in Better Sourcing, Better Operations and, Better Solutions. Climate

Commitment

Minimizing our environmental impact 

Ambition

  • Source 100% renewable electricity for our operations by 2025
  • 50% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 2030 from a 2019 base year
  • 33.3% reduction in absolute Scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions by 2030 from a 2019 base year
  • 46.2% reduction in absolute Scope 3 non-FLAG GHG emissions by 2030 from a 2019 base year
  • 10.4% of our suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services, transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by 2027

Key achievements 2023

  • 64.4% renewable electricity
  • During 2023, there was an 8.6% reduction in water use compared to 2022.
  • 12% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions
  • Absolute Scope 3 FLAG GHG emissions: 2,287,447 tCO2e
  • Absolute Scope 3 non-FLAG GHG emissions: 1,825,969 tCO2e
  • Work will be initiated during 2024 regarding suppliers´ emissions

 

Biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity and ecosystems. Reducing environmental impact

Ambition

100% verified deforestation-free (VDF) palm, 100% verified deforestation- and conversion-free (VDFC) soy supply chains by 2025

Key achievements 2023

  • 83% verified deforestation-free palm, up 12 percentage points during 2023
  • Verified deforestation- and conversion-free soy: 25%, up 5 percentage points during 2023

 

People

  • Continue to increase our impact on women and smallholders

Key achievements 2023

  • 241,188 women enrolled in the Kolo Nafaso program
  • 35% of tier 1 palm suppliers connected to AAK on the SEDEX platform

Solutions

  • Co-developing with customers to do good for people and planet

  • Ensure sustainability is fully embedded in the opportunity management process and strongly embedded in our customer co-development engagements 
  • Identify and share best practices on selling sustainable solutions
  • 50 percent of revenue contributing to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2025
